HISTORY - The town Pierre van Ryneveld is named after Genl Sir H. A. (nickname Pierre) van Ryneveld (1891 - 1972). He was

an illustrious military figure and is remembered mainly as the founder of the South African Air Force and chief of the Union of

South Africa's armed forces during World War II (1939 - 1945). Various streets in Pierre van Ryneveld were named after

aeroplanes piloted by South Africans during World War II. These include Spitfire Road, Gladiator Road, Mirage Road,

Shackleton Road, Tomahawk Road, etc.
